McBride rides waves to title at Papamoa
Port Waikato long board surfer Daryn McBride has claimed the Copious Logger Division title at the 2017 Barrett Homes New Zealand Longboard and SUP Open held at Papamoa Beach over the weekend.
McBride used his precision traditional surfing skills to trounce his opponents.
He posted a 15.2 point heat total for the final and in doing so also claimed the Katin best nose ride of the event award.
The nose ride prize, McBride said was what he wanted most from the weekend.
The surf was fractionally bigger for the final day of the event with a small 0.5 metre swell.
In the SPY Optics men’s longboard final, McBride finished the final in fourth place after becoming wave starved early on and not being able to catch up.
Red Beach surfer Thomas Kibblewhite returned to the winners podium for a second straight national event, winning the men’s longboard final.
