Franklin County News - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE - JOHN BOYNTON

‘‘It was a good time, it was a great time - we were all together as a family.’’

Damion ’’Chuck’’ Matene wanted one last fishing trip to cherish with his family.

The Pukekohe man, 50, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in his chest wall.

He contacted Race4Life and requested to take a scenic rail ride and go fishing at Coromandel Town with his children one last time.

Chuck fulfilled his wish this month and spent three days in Coromandel with his family.

Since Chuck stopped working before Christmas his family has struggled financially.

He has have five children who live at home and are very close to him - Damion 16, Kyle 14, Toko, 11, Victoria, 9 and Tamati, 6.

Chuck’s condition had taken a turn for the worse a week before the trip, although he received the go ahead from doctors to travel to Coromandel.

Denise, his wife, said Chuck and the family loved the trip and enjoyed the best Coromandel had to offer.

‘‘It was a good time, it was a great time - we were all together as a family and had fun, we were making memories for the kids.’’

Included in their trip was two nights accommodation, a personal driver, meals, a fishing trip and a train ride at the Driving Creek Railway.

Their daughter Victoria, proved to be a whiz with the fishing rod, catching 26 snapper while out at sea.

‘‘The kids loved it, it was good for them to be away from wi-fi - they had to entertain themselves, they were kids again.’’

Denise said she was blown away by the generosity and hospitality shown to the family on their getaway.

‘‘I’d like to thank the people of Coromandel and Race4Life, they got us there and they got us back they had thought the trip out so well.’’

The Race4Life Trust was formed to fulfil the wishes of palliative care patients 18 years and older.

The aim of Race4Life is to enable people living with life limiting illness to realise their dreams and create memories their families can cherish.

Race4Life’s first wish was fulfilled in September 2015 and more than 70 recipients have had their wish granted since then, with 95 per cent of wish recipients coming from the Auckland region.

Chuck Matene from Pukekohe had his wish granted of a family holiday in Coromandel granted by Race4Life.
