Programme to seek volunteers

Franklin County News - - OUT & ABOUT -

A Pukekohe grief and loss programme is seeking more volunteers to help change the lives of many who are suffering.

The Seasons for Growth programme has been operating for 14 years

The programme encourages the attendee to reflect on the changes that have taken place in their lives and how this has affected them.

Many of these changes will have brought some sense of loss. When this loss is significant it brings with it some level of grief that can have a life-long effect if it is not dealt with appropriately.

In the Seasons for Growth programme, companions attend two days of training to help them facilitate small group discussions of up to six people as they journey through their experiences of grief and loss.

Pukekohe Community Action director Jan Wallace said: ‘‘All feelings are good but they need to be acknowledged and addressed appropriately so the person can live a full life, otherwise these can come out and be expressed in a negative way leading to inappropriate expressions of frustration and anger or, equally damaging, withdrawal and depression.’’

The programme has impacted the lives of approximately 1500 attendees and runs over a sixweek period for adults, or an eight-week programme for children.

Over the past year more than 120 people have attended the programme.

Companions always work in pairs and new companions will be taught by experienced companions. The group wants to recruit more volunteers to work with both children and adults.
