Survival suits for guards

Waiuku Coastguard will be updating its survival suits thanks to Z Energy’s Good in the Hood, so its volunteers can continue to rescue lives at sea.

Senior master Richard Udy said being part of the scheme was fantastic.

‘‘It’s damn good actually. They’ve (Z Energy Waiuku) recognised what Waiuku Coastguard does out there and put their name forward [to help] which is much appreciated.

‘‘This year the money will be used to upgrade and get more wet weather gear which is quite expensive.

‘‘Some of the gear we’ve got is really old and it’s just keeping us up to date.’’

Udy, who has been involved with the charity for 43 years, added that the scheme was also a way to remind the public of the services the coastguard provides for the community.

‘‘It gets us out into the forefront of the public, it’s public awareness of what we do and where we are.

‘‘They (Z Energy Waiuku) have been really good and it helps keep us ticking along.
