Thieves targeting cars, property in Waiuku
‘‘Put locks on the sheds, move stuff of value out of open sheds to somewhere you can lock up, lock your gate, get an alarm.’’
Thieves have been very active in Waiuku lately.
They are thieving from rural properties towards the coast and the lower Awhitu Peninsula area plus houses in town around the harbourside and riverside area.
Cars in that area are also getting broken into.
Their method of operation at rural address is simply driving around looking for likely targets. Commonly they are stealing from sheds and taking items like tools, machinery, building materials, gas cylinders, etc, left outside.
So the message is: secure your shedding and avoid leaving items of any value out- side.
We need to secure sheds, garages and barns as much as the house.
Put locks on the sheds, move stuff of value out of open sheds to somewhere you can lock up, lock your gate, get an alarm.
These offences are called burglaries but in my experience burglaries have changed.
A few years ago it was commonly a burglar climbing through a window maybe taking TVs, jewellery and the like.
Now it is items such as lawnmowers, tools, building materials and even stock that are taken from sheds or outside.
Always keep an eye on your community - whether that’s your road or neighbours; investigate a car arriving at the neighbours’ during the day, and phone 111 right then if you are suspicious.
If a car comes up your driveway and you don’t know them or expect anyone I’d be calling police right then.
Almost every burglary we attend is followed up with a story that a neighbour or someone saw a dodgy car but didn’t think it was worth phoning.
Usually, if you are home they will drive off, but only to go to the next house, it’s totally opportunistic.
In town, cars parked up driveways and on the roadside overnight are getting a window smashed and rummaged through for anything of value.
Park your cars in your garage, leave nothing of value on display, and tradies - you’re going to have to take the tools inside for the night.
Crime always trends up and down in different areas , the good news is that burglars always get caught eventually, but this week we need your help.
