Pukekohe buzzing with Supercars fever
Burning rubber, revving engines and high-speed thrills all come together at the spiritual home of New Zealand motor racing - Pukekohe Park Raceway - this week for the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.
It’s going to be a cracker four days on and off the track, starting today - Thursday - with a special Fan Day at Pukekohe Town Square kicking off festivities.
The event, from 4pm-7pm, will feature classic cars, signings and selfies with the drivers, fun games and activities.
Supercars drivers will be in the square from 5.15pm-6.15pm, and include New Zealanders Scott McLaughlin, Fabian Coulthard and Shane van Gisbergen, as well as Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom, Chaz Mostert, Cam Waters and Jason Bright.
There will be a DJ, pedal cars, the chance to try your hand at an Xbox challenge, food beverages, and lots of fun.
On Friday, check out the Pukekohe Cardboard Car Rally (see above), as school students compete to create cars to be showcased, judged and raced around a designated course set out in the Pukekohe Town Square, which will also contain pit lanes.
On the big track at Pukekohe Park, it will be a hot contest for Supercar drivers, with 300 points and up for grabs at the event, to be decided on a new format of two 200km races – one each on Saturday and Sunday - with mandatory fuel and tyre stops.
There’ll be plenty of action in between the Supercars as well, with a record-equalling number of support classes that include a wide range of vehicles from various eras to feed every fan’s passion.
