Fantastic detective work from Franklin RSA’s Stoney Burke has led to three World War I medals given to a great niece of the original owner.
The medals, a 1914-1915 Star, a British War Medal and a victory medal, were found at the Pukekohe Salvation Army Family Store on Tobin St recently, tucked away in some clothes drawers that were donated to the charity.
The war medals belonged to Sister Eileen Hanan, who served in hospitals, and hospital ships throughout the war.
Burke, who is a volunteer at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, was able to search through the museum’s database.
He was able to locate a relative of Hanan, Jill Hyndman, who was Hanan’s great niece.
She was thrilled to be able to give the medals a good home.
