Op Shop Ball’s silver lining

- BRIAR HUBBARD

A glamorous spin on amazing op shop finds is the theme for the Franklin Silver Lining Trust’s biannual fundraiser.

The Op Shop Ball is a chance for bargain lovers, second-hand enthusiasts and creatives to put together an incredible thrift shop outfit to wear to the event. Money raised will go towards providing getaways and granting special wishes for families who have been through a tough time.

Te Kohanga’s Hewitt family is just one of many who have had a getaway in a time of need, thanks to the trust. Dad Martin Hewitt was struck by bowel cancer, which was a tumultuous time for his wife Jonelle and three children.

‘‘It was nice, more so for the kids, to get away from it all. You get sick of talking about it, everyone wants to talk about cancer, but you just want to forget about it,’’ Martin said.

The family spent a few days in Rotorua, enjoying quality time together and having fun on the luge and other activities Rotorua had on offer. Jonelle said it was just what they needed.

‘‘It was awesome, it was nice to get away from reality - it was definitely worth it.’’

Martin has recovered, and hopes many more families are able to have some time away when they need it most. The event is on April 14 at the Pukeoware Hall. Doors open at 6pm, dinner at 7.30pm with band to follow. Bar and raffles available. Tickets are $75 each, with tables of eight. Contact Jude on 021 260 3252.
