A great place to live

This is the first of a regular series of monthly columns, From the Mayor’s Chair, at Waikato District Council.

I’d like to focus on a few of the great places we have in our district.

I think we’d all agree that the Waikato is a fabulous place to live. I’m really proud of what we have to offer, especially at this time year.

So this summer why not get out and explore a part of the district you haven’t been to?

We have fantastic cycle and walking tracks available.

Earlier this month I was able to open the Perry Bridge in Horotiu. The cycle bridge is the final piece in the puzzle for those cycling from Hamilton to Ngaruawahia.

The district is also home to the world-famous-in-Ngaruawahia Hakarimata summit. Dash (or in my case trudge) up the 1349 stairs to gaze out over the Waikato basin. Well, on a fine day anyway.

In terms of what’s going on at the council, preparations for the next Long Term Plan are well underway. Councillors have had a number of workshops assessing lots of options for how we can deliver value for money throughout all the services we provide to the community.

Our Long Term Plan is our commitments for the next 10 years. We’ll be coming to you with this direction in March and April. I urge you to get involved in this process so we hear what’s important to you and learn what you think about our proposals.

Creating connected communities and delivering key projects is what council is all about. As a council we want to engage with you to make all of our lives better. As a growing district, getting the planning right is critical. When you have the chance to get involved in any consultation with us, please take it.

We want to make your dealings with us as council as easy as possible.

I really hope you all get a good break this summer.
