Counties players selected
Katene Clarke (PukekoheMetro Cricket Club) and Sandeep Patel ( Manukau City Cricket Club) have been named in the 15-man New Zealand squad to play in the ICC Under 19 World Cup held in New Zealand this month.
The squad was announced at the end of the National Under 19 Tournament in Christchurch where the prote´ge´s played for Northern Districts.
Clarke, 18, was selected as a batsman, although he does do some part- time bowling, and Patel, 19, was selected as an all-rounder.
Their promotion comes as no surprise to anyone involved at Counties Manukau Cricket Association (CMCA).
Both players made their club premiership debuts aged 14 (Patel for Manukau and Clarke for Weymouth) and both are regulars in the CMCA Senior Men’s team, Patel having played 12 matches for his province.
Anyone who had not heard of young Clarke, with an ‘e’ on the end, sat up and noticed him at the National U19 Tournament.
He was top scorer at the event– hitting 383 runs, 120 runs more than anyone else.
Katene’s brother, Tamati, played in the 2008 ICC Under19 World Cup in Malaysia.
The ICC Under19 World Cup starts on Saturday, January 13 and New Zealand is pooled with South Africa, West Indies and Kenya.
