Rhodes wins great player’s points race

Top-order batsman Barry Rhodes of Pukekohe-Metro has been Counties Manukau club cricket’s best player this season.

The 31-year-old South African finished first in the player points race, a competition that awards points for runs scored, the number of 50s and 100s made, wickets taken, the number of five and 10 wicket bags captured, catches taken and stumpings made.

It was a late surge by Rhodes who was lying third, 51 points behind Henry Gibson (Papakura) and 28 behind third-placed Luke Williamson (Manukau) in the final weeks of the one-day championship for the Duthie Cup.

Rhodes can thank his 114 against Waiuku in the second last round that got him home. It took his tally of runs to 440.

Counties Manukau Cricket chief executive Trevor Gill says the unusually wet summer and an enforced bye in the five-team twoday championship skewed this season’s point race. ‘‘Counties Manukau representative players were only involved in Saturday cricket for – wait for it - just nine Saturdays.’’
