Ro­torua is the birth­place of New Zealand tourism with the famed pink and white ter­races con­sid­ered the eighth won­der of the nat­u­ral world. Un­for­tu­nately they were re­claimed by Mount Tarawera when it erupted late in the 19th cen­tury.
