Good Food Guide - - Northland Auckland -

This new Takapuna spot delivers a fresh, modern approach to Chinese cuisine, with interesting dishes from many different regions. Tender poached free-range chicken thigh pairs with mouth-numbing Sichuan chilli sauce and peanuts in a perfectly balanced dish, while delicate balls of finely minced pork, prawn, shiitake and water chestnuts are covered in chewy sticky rice and served in a bamboo steamer. The space has been thoughtfully designed, with dark wood panelling, a mix of booth, banquette and table seating, plus quirky decor such as Seletti Hybrid bone china plates that have been turned into lamp shades. Attention to detail is again evident in a great drinks list, with a small but high-quality wine selection, quirky cocktails and a welcome selection of Kiwi craft beer. On-tap sparkling water and complimentary prawn crackers complete the picture. 152 Hurstmere Rd, Takapuna, ph: 09-930 0999, Lunch & dinner Tues-sun; large shared plates $30-$36
