This proudly Ital­ian spot on Pon­sonby Rd is light, bright and cheery, with a laid-back charm that draws in passers-by and keeps reg­u­lars com­ing back for more. While the green, white and red ac­cents here and there nod to its Ital­ian prove­nance, the over­all feel is more New York than Roma. As for the food, it’s Ital­ian all the way, with ap­peal­ing an­tipasti, a range of house­made pasta and a hand­ful of thought­fully pre­pared meat and fish dishes. The au­then­tic wood-fired pizza napo­le­tana is top notch – don’t miss the Sophia Lorenin­spired Sofia, a “de­con­structed eg­g­plant parmi­giana” in pizza form. Desserts are also great, with the baba al’aran­cia, a Neapoli­tan-style blood orange liqueur-soaked brioche with berry com­pote, Chantilly cream and vanilla anglaise, a re­cent high­light.
