From the elegant dining room to the well-considered wine list right through to the imaginative menu, Victoria Street Bistro is a real class act. Chef-owner Andrew Clarke (above) injects an element of surprise into his cooking through unexpected ingredients and clever flavour combinations – tender grilled octopus is paired with scallop, smoked chorizo and marinated heirloom tomatoes, with a black rice vinegar reduction taking things up a notch, while a rich, autumnal dish of braised, pressed lamb is joined by a velvety pumpkin puree, enhanced with interesting pops of flavour and texture from black pepper caramel, white anchovy and olive powder. Julia Clarke leads a team of attentive waitstaff, on hand to help with matches from the interesting wine list. 153 Victoria St, Hamilton, ph: 07-839 4444, victoriastreetbistro.co.nz Lunch & dinner Tues-sun; mains $34-$39 IN BRIEF Exciting cooking in a sophisticated setting
