TAUPO

The Bistro is a welcoming, family-oriented restaurant in the heart of Taupo. Chef-owner Jude Messenger, whose credentials include time in the kitchen at Huka Lodge and a stint at Peter Gordon’s The Sugar Club in London, has great respect for ingredients and seasonality. His tight, frequently changing menu features the likes of tender, melt-in-the-mouth sous-vide calamari with lightly spongy handmade gnocchi, fried capers and a delicately creamy Champagne veloute, and swordfish with chestnut puree, Italian parsley, orange wedges and slivered almonds. Desserts are a highlight too – think orange and cranberry sorbet with pomegranate molasses, or a simple and perfect lemon meringue tart. The ambience is unpretentious and comfortable and service is friendly. 17 Tamamutu St, Taupo ph: 07-377 3111, thebistro.co.nz Dinner Thurs-tues; mains $24-$39 IN BRIEF Thoughtful, classy food in a warm environment
