BAY OF PLENTY

A big, handsome eatery on Tauranga’s waterfront street The Strand, Macau serves up fresh, contemporary food that melds flavours of the East with influences of the West. With a bar, comfy booths and plenty of tables, as well as terrace and pavement seating and an upstairs area for functions, the fit-out channels oriental themes, with bold red and turquoise touches among the sleek black furnishings. The sharing menu has plenty to appeal, with highlights including the salmon and tuna poke – a “Hawaiian sashimi salad” with a tangy yuzu dressing – and the light and crunchy tempura eggplant, expertly dressed with soy caramel, sesame seeds, coriander, crispy shallots and Sichuan pepper. The wine list is an interesting mix of home and abroad, and there’s a decent selection of cocktails, cider, sake and beer. 59 The Strand, Tauranga, ph: 07-578 8717, dinemacau.co.nz Lunch & dinner 7 days; larger plates $21-$39 IN BRIEF Mod-asian food in slick surrounds
