GUSTO AT THE GRAND
Restaurant hotels can often be soulless and dreary affairs, but Gusto is the antithesis of that. Marble surfaces and dark wood exude comfort and style. Sean Connolly is at the helm but the team behind him know their stuff too. Pasta and risotti here are always a highlight – think pappardelle with duck and pea ragu or Cloudy Bay clams with spaghetti. The meat and fish dishes are well executed, but don’t neglect the vegetables. A dish of barley, broccoli, chilli, lemon and anchovy is excellent, as is the eggplant parmigiana. Desserts here are always a standout too – perfect tiramisu, silky panna cotta or sublime sweet ricotta cannoli. The wine list is wide, with some intriguing Italians and local Italian varietals, and a plethora of aperitivi and digestives too.
