This Pon­sonby stal­wart ca­su­ally charms vis­i­tors to the city and keeps lo­cal fans re­turn­ing with ex­cel­lent hospi­tal­ity. Ex­pertly ex­e­cuted mod­ern bistro fare by Sarah Con­way is matched by warm, keenly at­ten­tive ser­vice from Melissa Mor­row, Blair Rus­sell and their teams. Well-honed clas­sics such as steak frites and con­fit duck leg show­case tra­di­tional tech­niques while also mak­ing room for a few gen­tle twists in flavour and tex­ture. The smaller dishes tend to be more ex­plo­rative, such as the de­light­fully umami and tart/ sweet clams with pork mince in a savoury broth with chilli, spring onion, co­rian­der and black vine­gar. Wine knowl­edge is ex­em­plary, as is the wine list, and an after­noon menu of­fers the per­fect foil for a cock­tail or two up at the long, cen­tral bar.
