Good Food Guide - - Waikato -

Fiona Massey runs this elegant eatery in Cambridge’s lovely old National Hotel (circa 1912), of which many locals have nostalgic stories to tell. Massey’s refurbishment cleverly mixes old-school charm with a fresh, stylish look. She has a talented team in the kitchen, headed by long-time Waikato chef Harry Williams. The extensive, thoughtfully chosen wine list is in the capable hands of Frenchman Sebastien Lemercier. The food is bright and appealing and much attention is given to flavour matching, seasonal ingredients and smart presentation. Menu descriptions are deliberately simple and there are unlisted surprises on each plate. The fish special is always a work of art, and Alpha Street has a reputation for stunning desserts. There’s an excellent cheese selection as well.
