Good Food Guide - - Wellington -

Hidden off Hannah’s Laneway, Shepherd is a place for people in the know. The kitsch and Kiwi decor of the large, openplan room creates a quirky, casual bar and dining space. The menu is as intriguing as the idiosyncratic setting. Divided into pikelets and toasts, small, bowls, plates and desserts, it lends itself to sharing. Chef and co-owner Shepherd Elliott makes almost everything in-house, using local and seasonal ingredients in thoughtful and original ways, as in smoked pork belly, pulled pork shoulder, Jerusalem artichoke, hazelnuts, Brussels sprouts and fresh curd, a bowl of well-matched autumnal flavours. The compelling wine list and extensive beer list (co-owner Sean Golding also owns neighbouring Golding’s Free Dive) are as considered as the food, and the waitstaff are knowledgeable and helpful.
