Hid­den off Han­nah’s Laneway, Shep­herd is a place for peo­ple in the know. The kitsch and Kiwi decor of the large, open­plan room cre­ates a quirky, ca­sual bar and din­ing space. The menu is as in­trigu­ing as the idio­syn­cratic set­ting. Di­vided into pikelets and toasts, small, bowls, plates and desserts, it lends it­self to shar­ing. Chef and co-owner Shep­herd El­liott makes al­most ev­ery­thing in-house, us­ing lo­cal and sea­sonal in­gre­di­ents in thought­ful and orig­i­nal ways, as in smoked pork belly, pulled pork shoul­der, Jerusalem artichoke, hazel­nuts, Brus­sels sprouts and fresh curd, a bowl of well-matched au­tum­nal flavours. The com­pelling wine list and ex­ten­sive beer list (co-owner Sean Gold­ing also owns neigh­bour­ing Gold­ing’s Free Dive) are as con­sid­ered as the food, and the wait­staff are knowl­edge­able and help­ful.
