This for­mer pop-up restaurant, cre­ated in 2015, has now put down roots in Christchurch in mod­ern bistro style, and it’s al­ready so pop­u­lar, reser­va­tions are es­sen­tial. Fronted by chef-owner Alex Davies (above) and his team, all of whom share his pas­sion for the lo­cal, for­aged and or­ganic, Gath­er­ings is a breath of fresh air for din­ers want­ing some­thing a lit­tle dif­fer­ent. Make your way around the pur­pose­made re­cy­cled wooden benches and ta­bles and get cosy in the soft light of this in­for­mal restaurant that seats just 25. Let the staff rec­om­mend a glass of “living wine”, made the tra­di­tional way, and set­tle in for some plant-based com­fort food that sur­prises and delights: think or­ganic scotch egg, warmed miso vine­gar-coated radishes from the Gath­er­ings gar­den, and pound cake with Jer­sey milk ice cream. Gath­er­ings feels like a ca­sual but well-or­ches­trated culi­nary feast made from your back­yard.
