A friendly neighbourhood bistro open for early breakfast until late dinner, No 7 Balmac manages to be everything to everyone with great aplomb. Chef Billy Allan’s seasonal menu is based on local ingredients, including produce from the restaurant’s own garden, cooked on an open applewood fire. Highly recommended for its range of textures and spices is the spicerubbed beef with almondtahini hummus, sourdough pancake, toasted cauliflower tabouli and crispy onions. For an innovative gluten-free and vegan option, try the wood-grilled cauliflower with field mushrooms, bean mash, sunflower seed pesto and oily green drizzle. And don’t miss the rich, unctuous, bittersweet Cuban cheesecake. There’s an interesting wine list with both iconic and unusual wines, most available by the glass.
