Banana peel is incredibly rich in tryptophan – an amino acid that helps you sleep – meaning it’s often praised as a healthier alternative to sleeping pills. When raw, the peel is bitter and chewy, but tastes entirely different when cooked. The best way to use it is to make banana peel tea, which tastes far sweeter than you might imagine. TOP TIP Chop the ends off a banana and discard. Halve the fruit lengthways – still with the skin on – then cover in boiling water. Bring back to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
