Good Health Choices - - Be Informed -

Standing desks have been in the spotlight since we learned that sitting down for hours isn’t great for our health, but a new study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, suggests it may not be as beneficial as claimed. A review of 46 studies involving 1184 people measuring the health benefits of standing desks found standing for six hours a day only burns about 54 calories, around the same amount of calories in an orange. Lead author Dr Francisco Lopez Jimenez says the benefit is modest, adding that those who sit all day can mimic the benefits by breaking “that ‘doing nothing’ moment a few times a day. Just standing up and moving around and then sitting down again is helpful.” For advice on changing sedentary behaviour, see our story on page 84.
