This syn­thetic sweet­neer is found in prod­ucts such as diet soft drinks and chew­ing gum. It’s 200 times sweeter than sugar with roughly the same num­ber of kilo­joules, but is used in much smaller quan­ti­ties than nat­u­ral sugar, mean­ing it has prac­ti­cally no kilo­joules. It does, how­ever, stim­u­late ap­petite. Since as­par­tame doesn’t of­fer the body any­thing to curb the feel­ings of hunger, the brain thinks the body lacks nu­tri­ents, and or­ders us to eat more.
