Last word: Pete Evans
CHEF, COOKBOOK AUTHOR AND MY KITCHEN RULES NZ JUDGE PETE EVANS TALKS ABOUT HIS PERFECT WEEKEND, TIPS FOR HOME COOKS, AND WHY GISBORNE CAPTURED HIS HEART
What’s the most common mistake you
encounter on My Kitchen Rules?
People cooking food for Manu [Feildel] and me, instead of cooking food they love.
If you could invite three famous guests to dinner, who would you chose?
My wife and two kids are the most famous people in my world, and the ones I love to share any meal with.
What book is currently on your bedside table?
Being Human by Martin W Ball.
What’s your favourite part of New Zealand?
I fell in love with Gisborne as the ocean and land has some pretty special mojo to it. I would like to end up living there in the future.
What’s one food you couldn’t do without?
Lemons are one of the few fruits I eat on almost a daily basis, as their powerhouse nutritional properties mean these waxy citrus beauties stand out head and shoulders above the others. Just a quarter of a cup of lemon juice contains 32 per cent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C, as well as other key nutrients, such as folate.
WHAT’S YOUR TOP PIECE OF ADVICE FOR HOME COOKS?
Cook nutritionally dense foods that have a lot of flavour – always vegetables with a side of well-sourced meat, seafood or eggs.
HOW DO YOU COPE WITH STRESS IN THE KITCHEN?
There’s no stress in my kitchen – just good vibes and good tunes.
What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
Keep being yourself and hold on tight for a super-fun adventure!
