fashion collectives

with the best kind of clout

Good - - GOOD STUFF -

The Collective Africa and 5TKT are two new business initiatives empowering and supporting independent fashion designers in Africa and India respectively, as well as making their stunning artisanal designs available in New Zealand and Australia. The Collective Africa is a recent initiative of New Zealand designer Laura Monahan who moved from Marlborough to Mozambique in 2015. When she began showing some local Mozambican friends how to sew European designs the seeds were sewn for a label to be born out of a love of bold style in African fabrics to a socially conscious audience looking for something more unique than just the high street. It has partnered with onceit.co.nz and proceeds from the sale of each garment go back into the Northern Mozambican communities in Pemba. Monahan hopes it will become the vehicle to developing dreams for local women to believe they can do more. Meanwhile 5TKT is supporting start-up indie designers in India. The online store was founded in 2017 by New Zealand-based Indian textile/fashion designer Kriti Jain. “I thought I could support them in my own way,” says Jain. “I’m collaborating with these designers and buying what they’re making.”
