Morrinsville arborist Chrissy Spence won the women’s International Tree Climbing Championship in Texas recently, earning her bragging rights among her peers.

Chrissy began her climbing career on a whim when her brother-in-law had a vacancy. Now 14 years later, with 10 championships and four wins under her belt, she thinks it was a smart choice.

“It’s demonstrating our technique and confidence in the trees,” she said.

Competitions are done with minimal gear, unlike her day-to-day job which sees her carrying saws and other paraphernalia into the trees.

The victory earned Chrissy her airfares and accommodation for next year’s competition. “It’s just bragging rights really.” The competition had 64 professional tree climbers from 18 countries competing for the title of World Champion.
