Suffrage 125 event at Skycity
YWCA Hamilton is hosting a Suffrage 125 Celebration at Skycity Hamilton on September 19 to celebrate the work of the woman of today.
The YWCA is holding this event to celebrate the work that women like Kate Sheppard did 125 years ago to allow women of today to not only have a vote, but to have a say in their rights as women and a voice in their communities.
The right to vote eventually led women to break out of the patriarchal norms that society had relied on as well as allowing women to demand equal rights, such as equal pay in the workforce. The YWCA said Suffrage Day is important to commemorate because women’s rights have always been seen as second class.
“Even when the original act was passed to allow women to vote, the act had to state that the definition of ‘person’ included women.
“And despite the tremendous efforts women’s suffrage went to in 1893 there are still barriers that allow people to see women as less than people,” YWCA said.
Anyone who would like to celebrate women’s right to vote and recognise New Zealand’s unique history is welcome to attend. Secondary school students with ID will receive a discounted price.
