Hi tech scooters
The three-yearly audit of 1000km of Hamilton’s footpaths is being done this month using hi-tech scooters. Two scooters will record and rate any faults or defects, including damage caused by tree roots, utilities and vehicles. They will operate at a brisk walking pace and give way to pedestrians. Previously it took four months to walk and inspect the footpaths. This year $5.1 million is budgeted to replace footpaths on 80 streets, covering 17.3km. The council says this is more than double the previous year, and reflects the need for replacement of footpaths installed in the city 20 to 25 years ago.
