Fush, chups float reporter’s boat
Instead of using Hamilton’s Cobham Drv to head straight into Hamilton’s city centre for some tucker, make a right turn onto Grey St for some well-worth-it fish and chips.
Located on the left-hand side of the road by Brookfield St, Hamilton East, is the bright blue takeaway shop releasing an aroma no fish-lover could resist.
It’s name is Fush and Chups, a denomination that has stuck for many years and is now familiar to the locals.
A chalk board outside reads ‘Fish and Chips’ and ‘Milkshake or Thickshake’.
Inside by the fryer is Harinder Singh. His friends call him Harry. He moves from one station to the other, making drinks, constructing burgers and deep-frying chips.
It is usually only Harry here, and even under the immense pressure of serving customer after customer, he keeps cool, calm, and collected.
He purchased the takeaway shop only four months ago, altering the menu to provide vegetarian-friendly options and opening later hours.
But Harry says you can’t beat a piece of fresh snapper.
While waiting for their orders, customers were also happy to commend Harry on his fish frying skills.
All of them said he had turned the place around from what it was at the start of 2016.
Some had never wanted to purchase fish and chips from the previous store, but now they come to Harry when they’re craving freshly ordered sea food.
A plus side to this local chippie is the close distance between its front doors and the Hamilton Gardens.
Though it may not have sand or surf, the Gardens are a welcome replacement to the Kiwi classic of eating fish and chips on the beach.
It is literally a two-minute drive to the main entrance, and a quick walk to the grassy bank overlooking Turtle Lake.
We ate at the ‘‘golden’’ time of the evening, and our food was still warm when we ripped away the newspaper to tuck in.

FISH ‘N CHIPS RATING: 4.5 / 5
I ordered a cheeseburger, a crumbed piece of snapper, chips and a thickshake. It was all delicious. I am not much of a fish eater but the thick layer of salty crust was ideal.
I ate all of the burger (minus the beetroot) and the crunchy chips and chocolate shake were the perfect accompaniments.
Fush and Chups floated my boat.
We attempted to hunt down some of Hamilton’s best Fish and Chip stores, for our summer Local Chippie series. Aman Kaur helps out Harinder Singh at a busy evening at Fush and Chups.
