One of the north’s top lifeguards on the lookout
A Hamilton student has been named as one of the best lifeguards of his age.
Sam Cron, 16, has been a surf lifeguard for three years, starting out as a Little Nipper around age 13.
His stomping ground is Raglan Beach, and he was recently named the Under-19 Lifeguard of the Year for the Northern Region.
The 2017 Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards of Excellence were held on August 12. They aim to highlight and celebrate the best in surf life saving.
There are 17 beaches in the Northern region, ranging from as far as Whangarei to Bethells.
During his tenure, Sam’s had to help out with rescuing kite surfers, jet-skiers and swimmers.
He’s had experience at Orewa, Piha and Kariotahi Beach.
Sam will be out at Raglan over the summer, doing paid work during the week and volunteering over the weekends.
With the warmer weather coming up, Sam reminds everyone the golden rule of beachgoing: swim between the flags.
Sam’s Raglan Surf Life Saving clubmate Mark Shrimpton was also named Regional Lifeguard of the Year.
Sam Cron was awarded the U19 Lifeguard of the Year for the Northern Region.
