Last week we featured an opinion article by Hamilton city councillor Garry Mallett, who has publicly opposed spending on the Hamilton City Library. He’s faced criticism over his stance so we wanted to give him a chance to explain why he had voted against moves to upgrade the facility. Personally I think it would be a shame to lose a city library but in a newspaper it is important to give everyone on both sides of the debate a chance to have their say and a chance to explain their position. We hope Cr Mallett’s article went some way to achieve that goal. Turning to national politics now, and New Zealand voters should be put out of their misery shortly as Winston Peters promises to deliver his decision on a coalition Government in the next few days. So will it be National or will it be Labour? To insist NZ First should side with National because it recorded the most votes would suggest that we’re still operating in a First Past the Post mindset. What compromises will Jacinda Ardern and Bill English have to make to gain Winston’s favour?
