Rock strikes driver in Hamilton

Hamilton Press - - FRONT PAGE - PHILLIPA YALDEN

A woman has been taken to hospital after a rock the size of a football came flying through her windscreen and into her lap.

The rock ended up in the front seat of the blue Toyota sedan after smashing directly through the driver’s side of the windscreen on the outskirts of Hamilton on Monday morning.

The woman was taken by ambulance to hospital with moderate injuries following the incident at 9.45am, Waikato Police Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood said.

She also had facial injuries, according to a police media spokesperson.

Henwood said initial reports were that a rock had fallen off the back of a truck and gone through the woman’s windscreen. No other vehicles were involved.

It was unclear exactly where the incident had occurred but the woman had come to a stop just off State Highway 1, between Cherry Lane and Seabrooke Lane, at Tamahere.

Henwood said police were going to speak with the woman at Waikato Hospital.

A bunch of freshly made cupcakes sat abandoned in the passenger seat.
