Free mac­u­lar de­gen­er­a­tion tests

For the sixth year Hast­ings Here­taunga Lions Club is of­fer­ing free screen­ing for mac­u­lar de­gen­er­a­tion.

Mac­u­lar de­gen­er­a­tion is the lead­ing cause of vi­sion loss in peo­ple over 50.

The screen­ing will take place at Spec­savers, cor­ner of King and Here­taunga streets, Hast­ings, next Thurs­day, Oc­to­ber 11 be­tween 10.30am and 4.30pm.

Each year the num­ber of peo­ple screened has in­creased and last year there was a high per­cent­age of peo­ple re­ferred to the hos­pi­tal for fur­ther assess­ment and treat­ment.

World Sight Day is held ev­ery year on the sec­ond Thurs­day in Oc­to­ber and is pro­moted by the World Health Or­gan­i­sa­tion.

This is a Hast­ings Here­taunga Lions Club project in sup­port of that ini­tia­tive.

In ad­di­tion Hast­ings Here­taunga Lions Club is col­lect­ing any old eye glasses for re­cy­cling or do­na­tions for the Fred Hol­lows Foun­da­tion. Th­ese can be dropped off at Spec Savers at the Lions Booth on the day.
