Award-winning pie on Bakehouse menu

Hauraki Herald - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - TERESA RAMSEY

Customers at The Bakehouse Cafe in Thames can now have a ‘‘healthy’’ award-winning pie for lunch.

The cafe’s chicken and vegetable pie received a highly commended award at the NZ Bakels Supreme Pie Awards at an awards dinner in Auckland on August 1. Cafe owner Khemara Yin said he was surprised to win the award because he had only been making the chicken and vege pie for about a year.

It has a special filling that contains chicken with cranberry sauce and kumara. The pie is also topped with pumpkin seeds.

‘‘It’s nice and healthy, reckon,’’ he said.

‘‘I got feedback from the customers, they said ‘oh that’s really nice’, so then I decided to enter it. When I got highly commended, it really surprised me.’’ His customers told him the cranberry sauce made the pie taste like a ‘‘panini in a pie’’. ’’We’ve got a lot of flavour there.’’

Yin said it took two days to bake the perfect chicken and vegetable pies for the competition. ’’It’s really hard to get those pies, the right pie. It has to be the right way, it’s pretty tough.’’

Yin has owned the cafe for six

Iyears and been making pies for eight years. It’s not the first time his pies have done well at the national pie awards.

He entered the pie awards for the first time in 2015, when he scooped up a gold award for his mince and gravy pie. Yin is passionate about making pies and is constantly trying new flavour combinations and tweaking his recipes based on customer feedback.

‘‘All the time I like to make something new and get feedback from customers,’’ he said.

His newest creation is a pork, cheese and kumara pie. ‘‘That one is my favourite now,’’ he said.
