Baker puts Waihi on pie-eaters map


The peo­ple of Waihi don’t have to go far to find a gold medal win­ning steak and cheese pie.

Bun­hour and Phida Luon, who own the Waihi Bak­ery, picked up a Gold Award at the 2017 NZ Bakels Supreme Pie Awards held in Auck­land on Au­gust 1.

Bun­hour, or Vic as he is known, said it was very ex­cit­ing to get the phone call say­ing they had won an award.

‘‘You are not told which one of your pies has won an award but it is to let you know to be at the award din­ner,’’ he said.

‘‘They usu­ally ring by 7pm and when I had no phone call I thought we had not got in. And then the phone rang, very ex­cit­ing,’’ he said.

It is the first time he has made an award-win­ning pie but be­fore mov­ing to Waihi last Septem­ber he worked in his brother’s bak­ery in Taupo and baked the win­ning pie un­der his name.

There were no spe­cial in­gre­di­ents in the pies sent for judging.

‘‘They are the same pie any­one can buy in our shop, ex­cept it had to look per­fect,’’ he said.

The Luons love liv­ing in Waihi and like the small-town at­mos­phere.

‘‘It is a good place to start my first bak­ery and now I have put Waihi on the pie-eaters map,’’ he said.

Waihi Bak­ery came 5th in the Top 10 in the Ba­con and Egg pies sec­tion and 6th in the Mince and Gravy pies.

They will be en­ter­ing the con­test again next year.
