Laura raises thou­sands on a tread­mill


Laura Pea­cock still had a smile on her face af­ter walk­ing a mas­sive 60km in 12 hours on a tread­mill.

On Au­gust 5, the per­sonal trainer set a steady 5km/hour pace on the tread­mill at TCA Your Gym in Thames, sup­ported by friends, fam­ily and com­mu­nity mem­bers.

The chal­lenge has so far raised $3500 for the Heart Foun­da­tion who do re­search to help cure heart dis­eases, and she hoped to raise an­other $1000 for the char­ity over the next month, she said.

The fundraiser was in mem­ory of her Dad, Lawrence Pea­cock, who lost his life to heart dis­ease seven years ago at just 51 years of age.

Laura said she wanted to thank her Mum Chris­tine Pea­cock for her sup­port.

‘‘She’s just al­ways been very strong since Dad passed away and she’s aways sup­ported me in ev­ery­thing I’ve done,’’ Laura said.

The chal­lenge took 13 hours, which in­cluded 12 hours on the tread­mill and a 5-minute break each hour.

‘‘The gym was pretty much chocka all day. It was just buzzing,’’ she said.

‘‘I was never even near to be­ing by my­self, the TCA staff were here pretty much all day wait­ing on me, pre­par­ing food and fill­ing up my drink bot­tle - I even got mas­sages.’’

Laura was also sup­ported by lo­cal cafes with do­na­tions of food through­out the day.

‘‘I ac­tu­ally felt re­ally good all day, I didn’t feel too bad be­cause I had a new per­son to talk to ev­ery hour so it was quite cool, I was just yarn­ing all day.’’

The last hour was a strug­gle though, she said.

‘‘I didn’t have that much left in the tank, I was pretty tired.

‘‘The peo­ple got me through re­ally. If I didn’t have that mas­sive sup­port, I think I re­ally would have strug­gled.

‘‘Hav­ing friends and fam­ily and com­mu­nity through the whole day, that was just amaz­ing, I was pretty blown away.’’

Laura suf­fered a few blis­ters, bruises and swollen feet but had re­cov­ered enough to play net­ball a few days later.

This is the third time Laura has taken on an epic feat for char­ity.

Last year, she raised $4000 for the Star­ship Foun­da­tion dur­ing a 100km cy­cle ride along the Hau­raki Rail Trail from Thames to Waikino and back.

In 2015, she raised $1000 for the Can­cer So­ci­ety by re­fus­ing al­co­hol and junk food for six months.

She hasn’t de­cided what she’ll do for char­ity next year but plans to stage some­thing even big­ger and bet­ter for a dif­fer­ent char­ity each year.
