Laura raises thousands on a treadmill
Laura Peacock still had a smile on her face after walking a massive 60km in 12 hours on a treadmill.
On August 5, the personal trainer set a steady 5km/hour pace on the treadmill at TCA Your Gym in Thames, supported by friends, family and community members.
The challenge has so far raised $3500 for the Heart Foundation who do research to help cure heart diseases, and she hoped to raise another $1000 for the charity over the next month, she said.
The fundraiser was in memory of her Dad, Lawrence Peacock, who lost his life to heart disease seven years ago at just 51 years of age.
Laura said she wanted to thank her Mum Christine Peacock for her support.
‘‘She’s just always been very strong since Dad passed away and she’s aways supported me in everything I’ve done,’’ Laura said.
The challenge took 13 hours, which included 12 hours on the treadmill and a 5-minute break each hour.
‘‘The gym was pretty much chocka all day. It was just buzzing,’’ she said.
‘‘I was never even near to being by myself, the TCA staff were here pretty much all day waiting on me, preparing food and filling up my drink bottle - I even got massages.’’
Laura was also supported by local cafes with donations of food throughout the day.
‘‘I actually felt really good all day, I didn’t feel too bad because I had a new person to talk to every hour so it was quite cool, I was just yarning all day.’’
The last hour was a struggle though, she said.
‘‘I didn’t have that much left in the tank, I was pretty tired.
‘‘The people got me through really. If I didn’t have that massive support, I think I really would have struggled.
‘‘Having friends and family and community through the whole day, that was just amazing, I was pretty blown away.’’
Laura suffered a few blisters, bruises and swollen feet but had recovered enough to play netball a few days later.
This is the third time Laura has taken on an epic feat for charity.
Last year, she raised $4000 for the Starship Foundation during a 100km cycle ride along the Hauraki Rail Trail from Thames to Waikino and back.
In 2015, she raised $1000 for the Cancer Society by refusing alcohol and junk food for six months.
She hasn’t decided what she’ll do for charity next year but plans to stage something even bigger and better for a different charity each year.
