Last week may of us will have been lucky enough to see orca in the Firth of Thames as there reg­u­larly are at this time of year.

Lots of peo­ple I spoke to saw them or knew some­one who had, al­though no­body seemed to know that there is ac­tu­ally some­thing re­ally use­ful you can do when you see them.

As the body re­spon­si­ble for the for the pro­tec­tion, con­ser­va­tion and man­age­ment of all ma­rine mam­mals, DOC keeps a data­base of sight­ings of dol­phins and orca etc to help them de­ter­mine things like pop­u­la­tion sizes, breed­ing

The is­sue of global warm­ing is stir­ring lo­cal de­bate.
