CRICKET: For the second day in a row, no play was possible in Nelson in the Plunket Shield season-opener between home team Central Districts and Canterbury. CD were 301 for 7 at the close of play on day one but heavy rain on Thursday and more rain plus a sodden outfield yesterday saw both teams stuck in the Saxton Oval pavilion. The forecast is brighter for today but with CD still bating in their first innings and Canterbury yet to pad up, no result is likely. At Mount Maunganui, the stacked Northern Districts side beat Otago by eight wickets inside three days with rain also washing out day three in Wellington with Auckland trailing the hosts by 25 runs on the first innings with five wickets in hand.
