Ross Shield team does well

The 2018 Dannevirke Ross Shield team has done Dannevirke proud, Quinney Olsen, Dannevirke JAB chairman says.

“This was a great effort, the best for a long time,” he said. “We certainly rattled the city teams’ cages — they didn’t expect that. The coaching was excellent. Simon Prouting, Aaron Satchwell, Matt Augustine and manager Fiona Prouting did so well.”

With outstanding performances at last week’s tournament in Waipukurau, Dannevirke won the Life Member’s Salver, winning over country clubs Waipukurau 38-5 and Wairoa, 80 — 5. But they also did well against city teams, going down narrowly to Hastings East 7-10 and Hastings West, 10-12. The score against Napier 8-31 didn’t reflect the way Dannevirke played, with Napier head coach Tyrone Thompson quick to heap kudos on Dannevirke.

“Dannevirke took to us in the first 15 minutes and outplayed us at the rucks,” he said. “We absorbed a lot of pressure but came back well in the second half. It never felt like we were ahead of them. It’s the best Dannevirke side I’ve seen for a long time.” Rico Phillips, Josh Augustine and Manaia Hauiti were selected for the team. Elmer the patchwork Elephant’s 30th birthday was celebrated in style at the Dannevirke library last week.

Librarian Nikki Price began the afternoon reading a favourite Elmer story, before the children celebrated with puzzles, games, drawing and pinning the trunk on the elephant.

Colouring in and collage were favourites, as was the patchwork elephant maze.

Elmer the Patchwork Elephant is a children’s picture book series by the British author David McKee, with 39 books created since 1989. The series has sold more than eight million copies in 50 languages around the world and has been made into a television series.
