Spain clinch World Cup spot, Iceland on brink

Herald on Sunday - - IN OTHER NEWS -

Spain sealed their place at next year’s Fifa World Cup finals after they stormed to a 3-0 win over Albania yesterday. The only downside for Spain was a shaky performance from Gerard Pique, who was booed by large sections of the Alicante crowd every time he touched the ball, after his support for the previous week’s referendum on Catalan independence. Iceland moved to the top of Group I with a 3-0 win in Turkey after previous leaders Croatia were held to a 1-1 draw by Finland. Iceland can become the smallest nation to reach the World Cup finals if they beat bottom-placed Kosovo on Tuesday. Wales and Ireland both won yesterday and meet on Tuesday in a match which will likely decide the Group D runner-up. Ireland must win, with a draw enough for Wales.

Gerard Pique was constantly booed.
