Herald on Sunday - - IN OTHER NEWS -

Kiwi tennis doubles specialist Michael Venus has been thrust into the opening game of the tournament at the lucrative ATP Finals in London. Eighth-seeded Venus and American Ryan Harrison will face second seeds Henri Kontinen (Finland) and John Peers (Australia) in their first group match at the season-ending event tomorrow morning (NZT). Both combinations have won grand slam titles this year. Kontinen and Peers won the Australian Open while Venus and Harrison combined to win the French Open in Paris in June. That result gave their rankings sufficient boost to qualify for the last spot at the tournament featuring the eight leading pairings of 2017. Venus is the second Kiwi to contest the World Tour doubles finals. Brett Steven combined with American Tommy Ho in 1995.
