Turkey pushes for UN probe
Turkey and other countries will soon submit a formal request to establish a United Nations committee to investigate the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the Turkish foreign minister said yesterday.
Mevlut Cavusoglu’s comments came a day after UN human rights expert Agnes Callamard said Saudi Arabia had undermined Turkey’s efforts to investigate the death, which she described as a “brutal and premeditated killing”.
Cavusoglu said, “The [UN] SecretaryGeneral or the human rights commissioner can realise the establishment of a committee to shed light on the truth. In the coming days, along with some other countries, we’ll be making this request.”
Khashoggi’s Turkish fiancee told reporters she was hopeful his killers would be punished.
