Solid perfumes, which use a natural-oil carrier, are a good alternative to alcohol-based perfumes for those who are sensitive to alcohol. They can be stored in small glass containers, old lip balm pots, old makeup compacts, or even lockets, and easily carried around in your pocket or purse – or around your neck. For a unique gift for a special friend, use a heart-shaped locket.

The most common natural oil used as a carrier agent is jojoba oil, because it has a reasonably long shelf life and it’s the most similar to the oil on our skin. You can also use sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil. Heating causes essential oils to evaporate, so make sure you remove the melted beeswax from the heat before adding your essential oils.

Solid perfume basic recipe

Ingredients • 3 teaspoons (15ml) jojoba oil (or sweet almond oil) • 40-50 drops essential oils of your choice (see recipes that follow) • 2 teaspoons grated beeswax or beeswax pellets

Measure the carrier oil in a mini glass measuring container. Add the essential oils and blend. Set aside. Melt the beeswax in a double boiler or a heat-proof container placed in a shallow saucepan of boiling water. Remove from the heat and stir in the jojoba oil/essential oil blend. Pour into your perfume container immediately. Your perfume will set within 30 minutes.
