HOROPITO

-

The pepper tree, horopito ( Pseudowintera colorata), was used by Maori to treat skin and venereal diseases, among other conditions. The leaves were bruised and steeped in water for this. It was also taken for stomach pain.

Today, herbalists use horopito for allergic rhinitis and asthma, and it‘s well known for its action against candida, ringworm and other fungal diseases, as the plant possesses extraordinary antifungal properties. Horopito also stimulates circulation of the skin and helps to treat wounds, cuts and burns. Note: don’t rub your eyes after handling it – it’s hot!

Horopito is found on the edge of forests throughout New Zealand, often as part of regenerating bush. In cultivation, it grows 2m-3m tall. It‘s an attractive plant, as fresh growth is red and mature leaves are yellowy green with speckles of red.

Horopito prefers rich soil. It can withstand dry soils but it will do best when watered in dry weather. Plants can be grown in sun or part shade but better leaf colour is produced in sun. This spicy plant is also popular in restaurants.
