THE DESIGN

Blending seamlessly into an open-plan space, this renovated kitchen has a midcentury modern aesthetic in keeping with the home’s era and a galley layout that allows better flow in the small space. The bay window was replaced with a large picture window down to the floor for maximum sunlight, while louvres above the island provide ventilation.

The existing sink was repositioned in the island. Storage units were removed on the opposite wall and the depth increased to house an integrated fridge and a closed pantry unit, leaving an open bench with a small sink to service breakfast/coffee preparation. The corners were utilised as storage units from the opposite side of this area, so no space was wasted.

The splashback’s handmade tiles are enhanced by the use of keruing timber, and pendant lighting adds a practical yet delicate finishing touch over the island and nook, which deliberately does not have a door, in order to create the feeling of space and allow the floating timber display shelves to remain visible. •
