Leaky home owners George Griffith and Lesley Thomas were invited by the Manawatu¯ District Council to mediation last week and have jointly issued this statement:

“We have met on a confidential basis and talked about the issues in a constructive way, and we have identified a sensible way forward and want to make sure the process works well.”

George was in the fourth day of his hunger strike when the couple attended mediation.

The hunger strike was the couple’s last resort to bring attention, and a solution to their four and a half year battle with the council.

The couple bought their Pohangina Valley home in the Ruahine Ranges with a Code of Compliance Certificate.

However, the home failed to meet the building code in many areas including structural integrity, and parts of the building did not match consented plans.

George lost weight in the four days, but after mediation he began eating.
