Blooming marvellous

Mavis Jones was the bloom on the rose on Saturday as the life and founding member of the Kaikoura Garden Club claimed the lion’s share at the annual Rose Show. And it was her birthday. Dorothy Seddon presided over the presentation of an array of historic cups and trophies, bearing the names of illustrious gardeners and aficionados of blooms past.

Jones said she had been a bit worried about everyone else’s gardens after the strong winds the town had experienced in the last few weeks.

‘‘My garden was fine though. It was too late for some of the blooms; they were a bit past their best.

‘‘ It’s been a good season, though perhaps not as good as last year,’’ she said. Rose Show awards winners: Dorrie Mackle Vase: For displaying Premier Bloom. Presented with the Marjorie Young Cup and Ribbon : For Premier Bloom – Mavis Jones
